Otis' journey to better behaviour

Otis, a generally anxious Labrador Retriever, became defensive around unknown people around the home, unfamiliar dogs on walks and familiar dogs around resources. Unsure how to address these challenges, his owners sought professional help, Isabel enrolled Otis for the Silver Behaviour Package, a Reactive Rascals Group and joined some Scentwork UK workshops.

Through positive reinforcement techniques and consistent guidance, Otis gradually improved his behaviour and Isabelle learned effective communication strategies and gained a deeper understanding of Otis' needs.

“Otis has loved having Raychel’s help whilst we learn to understand his reactice behaviour. She has been invaluable in helping me help Otis, to reduce his reactivity and be happier in a variety of environments. Each session has been tailored to focus on a particular problem and has been adapted based on his responses, to get the best results. Raychel ran a short course for ‘Reactive Rascals’ and we also enrolled, in was ran in a variety of environments giving the dogs plenty of experiences and exposures in safe environments. She carefully managed each session and thoughtfully put it together to ensure progression was achieved after each session. We also attended some Scentwork UK workshops with Raychel and they greatly improved Otis’ confident and reactivity - the sessions have been progressive and interesting to keep us both enthralled" says Isabel.

 FAQs

  • When your animal is doing something something unwanted, unmanageable, frightening and/or dangerous, then a behaviour support package is more appropriate to address this. Raychel has devised 'Behaviour Packages' that involve an in-depth assessment of your dog in order to provide you with the best possible advice. Behaviour issues can be complex and need a more in-depth approach, including aggression, nervousness, reactivity, noise phobias, house soiling, over arousal, separation issues are all behaviours that would be need to seen in a full behavioural consultation.

The training packages are less in depth and only suitable for training issues (things you want your dog to do) such as loose lead walking, recall, to focus on you etc would be one of the training packages, either in one, three or six sessions.

  • Reactive dogs often exhibits strong responses to specific stimuli, which might include other dogs, people, or certain environments. Signs of reactivity in dogs can include:

    • Barking or lunging at stimuli (such as other dogs or people)

    • Excessive barking

    • Growling or showing teeth

    • Nervous or anxious behaviour

    • Difficulty calming down after being exposed to a trigger

  • Consultations with Raychel require a veterinary referral. Your vet will first need to rule out any underlying medical conditions that may be affecting your dog’s or cat's behaviour. This process is in line with the Veterinary Surgeons Act and the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors code of conduct. ANY qualified behaviourist that you contact should adhere to this practice.

  • Whilst I cannot guarantee specific results, my training programmes are designed to achieve positive changes. I can’t wait to give you the support and guidance you need, to help you and your dog succeed.

  • I use positive reinforcement techniques, focusing on rewarding desired behaviours rather than punishing unwanted ones. This approach ensures a safe and enjoyable learning environment for your dog and promotes long-term behavioural changes.

  • In the behaviour packages (bronze, silver, gold) your initial consultation will be two to three hours long. The first half will be an in-depth discussion about your dog, their background, behaviour presentations and then motivations. Understanding your dog is important for you to be able to embark on your behaviour modification journey as a team.

The second half of the consultation is practical - training cues that are going to be useful in your dogs rehabilitation, along with your plan

Note: The mini consultation/ assessment package is a maximum two hours (suitable for less complex issues) so if you would prefer more practical or time in your session, it is recommended to go for a full consultation.

  • I do offer group courses specifically designed for reactive dogs - you will need an assessment on consultation prior to joining a group
